The family of a Christchurch boy who was traumatized after a hit and run says they are “over the moon”, the alleged driver has been arrested.

Beau MacBeath was crossing the street on his new scooter with his cousin when a car passed a bus and collided with him on McGregor’s Rd, Bromley, around 3:20 p.m. on October 1.

The driver fled the scene and Beau was taken to Christchurch hospital with a broken arm and kneecap.

A 27-year-old man was arrested Tuesday and charged with dangerous driving and causing injury and failing to stop or determine injuries after an accident, a police spokeswoman said.

“I’m absolutely over the moon that this guy got caught, maybe he’ll do the right thing and hopefully stay off the streets.”

Beau was released from Christchurch Hospital last Wednesday and while he was recovering well he was fairly immobile, Scott said.

“He’s still in a splint and his leg needs to stay straight and of course the cast will stay on his arm for a few more weeks.”

Scott bought Beau the electric scooter about a week before the accident, hoping it would help him forget the loss of his father to cancer earlier in the year and keep him away from the devices.

Scott said Beau suffered from nightmares, anxiety, and was very stressed in the weeks after the accident.

“When I explained to Beau that the police had arrested a man and he was in custody, his first words were ‘I don’t have to worry anymore,’ so for me that was the icing on the cake,” he said.

“We hope that once she becomes mobile, she will go back to normal routines, like going back to school, and that her confidence will slowly regain, but it’s just baby steps.”
