Changes will be made to a notorious stretch of State Highway 1, known as Bluff Highway near Invercargill.

Last weekend, a doctor died after an accident near Woodend on State Highway 1, and about three weeks ago an 18-wheeler rolled over near Awarua.

A car [NZ Transport Agency] Lower South Island Transportation Systems Manager Graeme Hall said widespread improvements to highway signage and marking were proposed as part of scheduled maintenance.

The agency was also reviewing the speed of the highway as part of a nationwide review and had not received any complaints about the unsafety of this section, it said.

From 2015 to 2020, there was one fatal accident and 16 crashes that required hospitalization on SH 1 from Invercargill to Stirling Point, Bluff, Hall said.

The road was re-sealed near Woodend in 2018.

Waka Kohati was making progress on building a $ 5 million to $ 6 million roundabout at SH1 and Elles Rd, Hall said.

Work was also in progress on the final section, from Awarua to Bluff, of a shared road from Invercargill to Bluff, he said.

The trail was due to be completed by mid-2021 and would provide a safe alternative for cyclists and walkers to using SH1, Hall said.

The only fatal accident did not include the death of Invercargill doctor Giovan Vincent Anthony ‘Anton’ De Croos, near Waimatuku Bridge, Woodend, on December 5.

Police are requesting sightings of a light blue Hyundai Sonata Saloon or for information from anyone on the road between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
