Long-standing Buzz Lightyear Plot Hole in “Toy Story” Directed by Pixar CCO Pete Docter
From Pixar soul it’s out now and should definitely have it at the top of your watchlist.
Surrounding the release of the existential animation directed by Jamie Foxx, writer / director and company veteran Pete Docter took the time to address some long-standing questions about Pixar’s larger universe, namely research related to the plot about Toy Story ‘s famous space cadet Buzz Lightyear.
In an interview with Bill Bradley for HuffPost, Docter, who also serves as Pixar’s creative director, was asked about the fact that Lightyear accepts the whole “floating like a toy” thing in front of humans despite being initially convinced that he is a true intergalactic traverser.
Given the Toy story is a (classic) movie about sensitive toys, it’s hard to believe that this facet of the story can reasonably be considered a “plot hole,” although some people apparently disagree.

According to Docter, this was discussed during the production of the first 1995 installment of the franchise (and the studio’s filmography). In the end, the team concluded that it just doesn’t matter.
“We went through a lot of discussions about Toy storyThe first one, like, ‘If Buzz doesn’t know he’s a toy, why does he stiffen when a kid walks into the room?’ “Docter, who also directed Inside out, said.
“We had a lot of explanations and we talked about it too. And in the end, nobody cared.”
What’s most important when telling a story, Docter added, is finding a way to predict which aspects of the plot your audience will find most important “or at least drive their interest there.”
