Forty people were injured in an accident involving a school bus and train at a level crossing near Palmerston North.
Six people have been taken to Palmerston North Hospital for treatment, with injuries ranging from mild to moderate, said a spokeswoman for the St John ambulance.
Police said initial indications were that there were “serious injuries”, but later clarified that no children had been seriously injured.
“However, some are receiving treatment for minor injuries. The total number of children on the bus is being determined.”
Some children had to be pulled out of the rubble through the window of a bus.
St John’s ambulance said a total of 40 patients were being evaluated.
There are four ambulances and a rapid response unit at the scene.
Several people wrapped in blankets are receiving medical attention at the scene.
A witness said the arm of the crossing barrier “looked shattered.”
Parents who want to pick up their children have been asked to speak to the police at the scene.
One person was trapped on the bus, Fire and Emergency NZ said.
Emergency services were called at the intersection of Railway Rd and Clevely Line in Bunnythorpe shortly after 8 am.
The detours are already in place and motorists are being told to avoid the area at Dixons Line and Railway Rd.
A KiwiRail spokeswoman said the company was shocked to learn of the accident this morning.
“Our thoughts are with everyone involved. Our staff are on site and working with emergency services.
“We will work closely with the agencies for any investigation, but for now the priority is to allow the emergency services to do their job.”
The level crossing was equipped with flashing lights and bells, the spokeswoman said.
