Brian Tamaki says he will hold a church service this Sunday, despite restrictions on meetings under Alert Level 2.
Previously, Level 2 gatherings had been limited to 100 people, but Jacinda Ardern announced Monday that the limit would be limited to 10, including for weddings, religious events, funerals, and tangi.
The Church of Destiny leader says that a church meets “essential spiritual needs” and that the government is violating the rights of the church under the New Zealand Bill of Rights by not allowing them to operate services.
“New Zealand seems to have overly controlling parents as politicians, compared to other countries.
“Our rights as churches under the New Zealand Bill of Rights are being violated, particularly section 15 regarding the freedom to manifest religion or belief in worship, the practice of observance, and public or private teaching.”

Funerals, tangi and weddings can only have 10 people below alert level 2.

Mr. Tamaki said in a statement yesterday that Destiny Church will hold a service this Sunday and has encouraged other churches to do the same.
“Until now, we have been responsible for all the requirements described by the Ministry of Health.
“We will now invite all of our members to be tested in the coming days and celebrate our church service this Sunday at our facilities. I invite all churches in New Zealand to act in accordance with their rights (see the New Zealand Bill of Rights) and not allow this government to treat us as non-essential or as an afterthought at the bottom of the pile. ”
Under Tier 2, cinemas, bars, restaurants, and shops can operate, but the prime minister said Monday that people would have to be socially estranged and separated.

The leader of the National Party is happy to move to Level 2, but is concerned about the latest government legislation.

Ms. Ardern said the collection limit has been limited to 10 because it is “much easier to contain” and “much easier to locate.”
National’s Simon Bridges is pushing for that limit to change, and he said this morning that the two or three things important to him are funerals, tangihanga and places of worship.
Bridges said it was “inhumane” that some family members were unable to attend funerals or tangi.
