Jesiah Oli-Alainu’uese saved her teacher’s life when she was choking.
When he saw his teacher gasping for breath, 10-year-old Jesiah Oli-Alainu’uese knew exactly what to do.
His actions at lunchtime last Thursday likely saved the life of his teacher, Leah Smythe.
Jesiah is a student at Raureka School in Hastings and was about to leave her classroom to meet her friends for lunch when she saw Smythe start coughing.
“He patted me on the shoulder. I could see that she was choking, so I hit her on the back three or four times. Really difficult, ”he said.

That worked, and the chunk of food lodged in Smythe’s throat fell off, allowing him to breathe again.
Jesiah said she knew what to do because she had seen someone at another school do it to a student who was choking.
“I hit her pretty hard. I got my strength from boxing training. When she called my mother, she said her back still hurt, ”Jesiah said.
Jesiah’s feat was recognized at a school assembly on Friday, in which a St John Ambulance paramedic presented her with a gift.
Director Greg Riceman said he was very proud of Jesiah.
“It was really great what he did,” Riceman said.
