Zayne Hinton was swimming in the sea when he saw something orange floating in the water. The 7-year-old grabbed it and found himself clutching an old $ 5 bill.
You didn’t know it at the time, but that $ 5 bill would soon attract bids for more than 100 times its face value on the Trade Me auction website and bring you closer to your dream of owning a two-stroke motorcycle.
By Thursday night, the moldy $ 5 bill had attracted a bid of $ 530 with another day left at auction.

The Christchurch boy was swimming in Sumner Beach on Saturday when he saw the wave of good luck that changed his life.
“I saw this orange thing floating in the sea,” he said.
“I picked it up to see what it was and it was a $ 5 bill. I was happy.”
Philippa Hinton said her son immediately began to fantasize about what he could buy with his newfound riches.
“As soon as he found out what it was, he was blown away,” he said.
“He thought he had the power to buy whatever he wanted. He loves motorcycles so he thought he could get a two-stroke motorcycle and the mansion to go with it. “
On the way home from the beach, Zayne’s father, Brad Hinton, came up with the idea of putting the old bill on Trade Me to see if it would sell for more than face value.
“I thought it would make us all laugh to see if it would attract attention. You have – great time. Who would have thought it, ” he said.
“I thought if he made $ 10, then good for him.”
The list took off once Trade Me put the article in their Cool Auctions section on the home page.
Regarding the motorcycle, Brad Hinton said his son can be allowed to buy one “if he behaves well.”
Philippa Hinton said her son had other plans for money, beyond the dream of a motorcycle.
“He said he would take us all out for tea and buy all the pets a toy.
“He suggested McDonald’s.”
Zayne had theories about the origins of the mystery note, which appeared to have been in the sea for some time as the edges were stained with mold.
“It could have come from a boat, a jet ski or a swimmer.”
