Emergency services were called to Lake Waro in Hikurangi on Friday afternoon.

An investigation is ongoing after a body was found in a lake in Northland.

Emergency services were called to Lake Waro in Hikurangi, 15 kilometers north of Whangārei, just before 1:30 p.m., a St. John spokeswoman said.

She said that an ambulance had attended the scene, but that any additional information would have to come from the police.

Local man Rod Cunliffe said police told him a body was being recovered from the water.

He said the lake was a popular place for swimming and kayaking, and while the lake was small, the old quarry was very deep.

A police spokeswoman said police were called to the scene after reports of a sudden death in the lake water.

“The police are doing a series of investigations to establish what happened.”

The owner of Vinegar Hill Bed and Breakfast had planned to do a group kayak on Friday afternoon, but the lake is now under a rahui, with swimming and sports prohibited.
