Black Caps vs Pakistan: Tim Southee becomes the third Kiwi to take 300 proving grounds

Tim Southee has become the third New Zealander to take 300 wickets in test cricket, joining Sir Richard Hadlee and Daniel Vettori in an exclusive club.

He is the 34th bowler in history to reach the milestone and the 25th locksmith, arriving on the fourth day of the first test between the Black Caps and Pakistan at Bay Oval on Mount Maunganui.

Southee’s 300th wicket came early in the final session on day four when he had Haris Sohail catch Mitchell Santner in coverage of nine.

He started the third day with 296 wickets to his name and claimed his 297th and 298th scalp when the Black Caps sacked Pakistan for 239 in their first innings of their 76th test.

His 297th came 20 minutes before lunch on the third day when he took a lead from Azhar Ali that moved BJ Watling behind the stumps, although the batter only left after the Black Caps reviewed the original no-out decision.

His 298th came four balls later, when Haris sent a catch to Henry Nicholls in a ravine.

He didn’t hit again in the first inning for Pakistan, but did get his 299 on his second over in his second inning, when he had Shan Masood caught by Ross Taylor on the first slip by a duck.

Hadlee claimed her 300th spot in her 61st trial, when she caught Australian captain Allan Border LBW in the basin reserve at Wellington in February 1986.

Vettori claimed his 300th in his 94th test, when he had Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka caught by Jacob Oram in the depths at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo in August 2009.

The left arm spinner finished 362 windows from 113 tests (including one in a test for a World XI) while Hadlee finished 431 from 86 tests.

Trent Boult, Southee’s longtime new ball teammate, is next in line to reach the 300 wicket milestone, currently with 275 out of 70 games.

When Southee reached 300, Pakistan was reeling at x-3 in their second inning, setting a goal of 373 to win with a minimum of 136 overs.
