Fire crews have been fighting a massive fire at a Christchurch pizza factory after the industrial building in Hillsborough caught fire Tuesday morning.

Fire crews were alerted to the fire in the industrial building on Foundry Drive at 1.13 a.m. Tuesday.

Building is understood to be the Romano pizzeria, which makes pizzas and supermarket brand bases.

There were no reports of injuries, and a Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said they were all accounted for.

A FENZ spokesperson said 11 appliances from across Christchurch initially attended as part of the “large-scale response.”

And the smoke from the fire could be seen up to a couple of kilometers away.

“There will be a lot of people who will wake up this morning and smell smoke.”

Those who were concerned about the smoke should stay inside with the doors and windows closed, the spokesman said.

Since then, the number of crews has been reduced and there is currently a fire investigator on site.

The building is about 2000 square meters and is located within an industrial area in Hillsborough.
