At last year’s awards, Auckland pop sensation Benee took victory in all four categories for which she was nominated. Tonight he did twice as much by replicating that incredible feat at the newly renamed Aotearoa Music Awards held at Spark Arena.

The singer-songwriter picked up the Te Waiata Tōtahi or te Tau | Single of the Year Tui by Super only, her song that went viral on the social networking site TikTok during the first confinement to become an international hit for resident Gray Lynn.

Benee, whose real name is Stella Bennett, also collected the awards for Te Kaipuoro Takitahi Toa | Best Solo Artist, Best Review Musician | Best Pop Artist and International Achievement Award.

It has been a huge year for the 20-year-old. Last month your catchy song Brilliantine won the APRA Silver Scroll award and on Friday released his long-awaited debut album ‘Hey u x’, which features collaborations with artists like Lily Allen and Grimes.

Indie-pop band The Beths was also a winner in multiple categories. They improved on the harvest of two awards from last year to leave tonight with three, including the coveted Te Pukaemi o te Tau | Album of the Year Award, which was awarded for their second album Jump Rope Gazers.

For the second year in a row they also won awards for Te Roopu Toa | Best Group and Te Kaipuoro Manohi Toa | Best Alternative Artist.

Crowd favorites Six60 scored a hat-trick, winning Te Toa Hoko Teitei | Best-selling artist for the third year in a row.

South Auckland teenager Jawsh 685 rightly scored Te Kaituhura Puoro Toa o te Tau | Breakthrough Artist of the Year award for his hit Laxed – Siren Beat, which reached No. 1 in 17 countries after American R&B singer Jason Derulo tested it for his song Savage Love.

The producer, whose real name is Joshua Nanai, made history as the first person from Pasifika and the third New Zealander to reach No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. This feat also saw him receiving an International Achievement award tonight.

Hip-hop duo Church & AP, real names Elijah Manu and Albert Purcell, won the Te Kaipuoro Hipihope Toa | Best Hip Hop Artist to continue their winning streak after winning the Tui for Best Pacific Group at the Pacific Music Awards in October.

On the other hand, Drax Project won the award for Digital Record of the Year | Radio Airplay Record of the Year for their song Catching Feelings, which features Six60. LAB won Indigenous Music Player | Best roots artist, Haz & Miloux won Te Kaipuro Awe Toa | Best Soul / RnB Artist, and Te Kaipuoro Rakapioi Toa | Best Rock Artist went to City of Souls.

Other winners include Lee Mvtthews (Best Electronic Artist), Maimoa (Best Maori Artist) and Andrew Beer & Sarah Watkins (Best Classical Artist).

The NZ Music Hall of Fame was packed this year with the addition of several artists. The latest additions were Johnny Cooper, Max Merritt, Peter Posa, Dinah Lee, The Chicks and Larry’s Rebels.
