One of the Highlanders’ favorite sons is online to make a dramatic comeback for Super Rugby Aotearoa.
Former All Black Ben Smith, who said an emotional goodbye to the Highlanders and All Blacks in 2019, is “against” returning to the Dunedin-based club, according to One News from TVNZ, but you haven’t signed a contract yet.
The imminent return from the outside reportedly comes on the same day that another former All Blacks outside, Nehe Milner-Skudder, was confirmed to join the Highlanders for the 10-week national competition.
Smith, winner of Super Rugby with the Highlanders in 2015 and a veteran of 84 tests for the All Blacks, is an immensely popular figure among New Zealand rugby fans.

He has been playing for the French club Pau in the French Top 14, but recently returned to Dunedin due to the coronavirus pandemic, A new reported.
Covid-19’s disruption to world sport has also opened the door for All Blacks lock Sam Whitelock, who was on a gap year in Japan, to return to the Crusaders for Super Rugby Aotearoa.
