US President Donald Trump is doubling down on his unsubstantiated claims that he won the US election, stating “I WON THE ELECTION” in a tweet in all caps.
Joe Biden has been crowned the winner five days after the elections began counting, winning 290 of the electoral college votes.
By comparison, Trump won 214.
Either candidate needed at least 270 electoral college votes to secure the presidency.
In his first series of tweets since the news of Biden’s victory broke, Trump affirmed “I WON THE ELECTION” with “71 million LEGAL VOTES.”
“BAD THINGS HAPPENED THAT OUR WATCHERS COULD NOT SEE. IT NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE,” he wrote.
He did not provide any evidence to support his claim.
As the votes are counted, both parties can send a representative to watch and supervise. Due to the Covid-19 precautions, observers from both sides kept some distance from the table.
Trump has not clarified what he thinks are “legal votes” or how he trusts that the 71 million votes in his favor were “legal.” The Associated Press reports 70.6 million votes cast by Trump and 74.9 million votes by Biden.
Five minutes after the tweets were sent, Twitter flagged them.
The tweets come with a warning message: “This claim about voter fraud is in dispute.”
Trump has maintained allegations of fraud involved in the elections, even saying he would launch a legal challenge.
Neither Trump nor his legal team have provided any evidence to back up their claims.
Trump was seen playing golf as the election result was announced, but has since returned to the White House.
Meanwhile, Biden is expected to address supporters from his home in Wilmington, Delaware at 2 p.m. NZT.
