Auckland residents are being told to prepare for storms as the Pacific cyclone season enters full swing.
Auckland Emergency Management asks residents to prepare for sudden rains and stormy weather during late December and January.
“Late December and January is the prime season for Pacific cyclones and the tail of these types of weather systems can hit us here in Auckland,” says Auckland Emergency Management General Manager Kate Crawford.
“We stay in close contact with meteorologists to make sure we are prepared for any unstable weather as well,” he says.
Checking gutters, gutters and securing items in case of a storm are some of Auckland Emergency Management’s tips.
“If you live in a flood-prone area, consider any plans you need to put in place, including plans for visitors on vacation or travel,” says Crawford.
“Remember also, if we have regular downpours, the land can flood and increase the impacts of flooding. And finally, if you encounter flooding when you are away from home, remember, never drive through floods. “
Auckland City Councilwoman Sharon Stewart says that with many people leaving the city for the summer holidays, it’s a good time to make sure property checks are done.
“Checking that your property is clear of debris, even before you leave, is a quick job that could save you a lot of trouble down the road.
“This is also a good time to check that your basic home emergency plan is in place, especially if you are on vacation elsewhere or have visitors during the holiday period,” Stewart says.
– Be prepared: pay attention to the weather forecasts, plan your trip around them, and prepare before the storm hits.
– Make a plan: Make sure your family, friends and roommates know where to meet or what to do in an emergency.
– Clean gutters and drains on your property, check trees for weak branches, and bring your cat / dog / rabbit (or any other pet) inside.
– Keep flashlights and batteries, a full gas bottle for your barbecue, and a battery-powered radio on hand in case the power goes out.
– If you need power to pump water or operate septic systems, have a backup plan in place if the power goes out.
– If the place where you live is isolated or could become isolated, make sure you have everything you need to continue for a day or two and notify the authorities if you need help (phone 0800 22 22 00).
– Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or vulnerable, and if you cannot help, notify the emergency services.
– If you are away from home, never drive in flood waters and always drive according to conditions.
