Twenty-four fire crews were dispatched to fight the fire at Ponsonby Middle School, a New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokesperson confirmed to 1 NEWS.

Emergency services were first called at 4.28pm for the fire and it was contained around 5.40pm

Police were also on the scene and an ambulance and rapid response unit were dispatched as a precaution. However, no one has been treated in the fire.

No one has been evacuated and no one is believed to have been trapped inside the building, says the FENZ spokesman.

A letter was sent to parents tonight after the fire was extinguished, confirming the fire in the technology block.

“As it was after hours, all staff and students are safe,” wrote Principal Nick Wilson.

Parents have been asked not to visit the school and it is closed for tomorrow.

A firefighting team remains at the school buffering hot spots and monitoring throughout the night, FENZ says.

A fire investigator is also on the scene.

Ponsonby Intermediate was supposed to end before summer break this week, the period scheduled to end on Friday.

Video of today’s fire scene supplied to 1 NEWS showed roaring flames rising into the sky as the school building burned down.

In a separate video, loud pops could be heard coming from the building as the fire raged.

The fire also sent thick smoke through the city center and led to peak-hour road closures, which have since reopened.

Police confirmed that they are treating that fire as a suspect.
