Firefighters were called to Hayden St, Freemans Bay, just before 6 am Saturday to a “well-involved” flat fire.

An apartment in central Auckland has been “totally destroyed” in an early morning fire that also left another apartment damaged by smoke.

Firefighters were called to Hayden St in Freemans Bay just before 6 a.m. Saturday to find a ground floor apartment on fire.

Daniel Nicholson, a spokesman for Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ), said the flat fire was “well involved” but that everyone inside was accounted for.

About 20 minutes later, five teams had contained the fire and were putting out the hot spots, but had not been able to determine its cause.

The ground floor apartment was “totally destroyed” after the fire devastated it.

A fire investigator was called in to determine the cause, he said.

Incident controller Frank Walsh said the apartment was “totally destroyed” and caused smoke damage to the top floor.

Walsh said city firefighters were able to see smoke from the station when they got the call.

He described the flat as “completely engulfed in fire” when crews arrived on the scene.

The fire on the ground floor left the one upstairs damaged by smoke and with some broken windows.

Firefighters cleared floors above and around the one that was on fire as they worked to put it out, Walsh said.

A neighbor, Trevor, said he woke up to the sound of windows creaking and smashing just before 6 a.m.

When he looked outside, there were flames coming from the floor, so he called emergency services.

Trevor believed that a family lived there with a small child, who was later “shaken”.

Walsh said a woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
