At least 10 people were crammed into a vehicle when a teenager lost consciousness.

Police were called to an incident in Rolleston, near Christchurch, around 1:20 am Sunday, where a person was found “unconscious” in a van, a police spokeswoman said.

Stuff understands that the teenager, who is in critical condition at Christchurch Hospital, was with a group of at least 10 people who spent less than an hour at the Famous Grouse Hotel in Lincoln before leaving at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. They didn’t use any of the hotel’s courtesy vans.

The group, who got into a Toyota Hilux Surf, drove from the hotel and parked on a street in Rolleston, about 12 kilometers away. It is not known whether they drove directly there or stopped en route.

“Others at the scene provided medical attention and the man was transported by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital, where he remains in intensive care,” a police spokeswoman previously said.

The teenager remained in critical condition Monday, a spokeswoman said.

A resident of the street where the unconscious teenager was found said a neighbor gave the young man CPR.

A woman, whose son was in the car, declined to comment. The Toyota Hilux Surf was moved off the road to private property on Sunday.

The Famous Grouse Hotel general manager declined to comment.

An investigation into the incident is underway.
