AOS in response to the incident near the Waikeria prison

A major police operation is underway near the Waikeria prison.

Police have closed Waikeria Rd from traffic.

Members of the Armed Criminal Squad were looking for cars traveling west on Waikeria Rd.

Police tell people waiting in traffic that it is a domestic firearm incident.

The police helicopter has been deployed.

Police were looking for a person of interest, they said.

A police officer at the Waikeria Rd cordon told motorists they hoped that “to his knowledge” the person had been found and was “handcuffed.”

An ambulance arrived and crossed the Waikeria Rd cordon.
