America’s Cup 2021: New Zealand team appears to be testing a new ‘batwing’ mainsail design, mirroring that of American Magic

The New Zealand team appears to be testing a new configuration on their AC75 boat, as their preparation for the America’s Cup match increases.

The Kiwis have enjoyed extra time to train and experiment since the conclusion of the World Series regatta in December, and they won’t be needed in competitive waters for two and a half weeks.

The New Zealand team will keep an eye on the Prada Cup final series to see who from Luna Rossa and Ineos Team UK will advance to face them for the Auld Mug.

But that extra time defenders have to improve their ship appears to have been well spent, and one witness believes Te Rehutai’s design is different from seeing the ship in the water today.

“[They’re] try an American Magic mainsail for high winds. They must see some value in trying this, “a source told the Herald.

“The concept makes sense. When it’s over 15 knots, the extra overhead sail area is just drag and slows the yacht down when going upwind. [it’s] a good choice for windy conditions. “

Several other sources confirmed to the Herald that Team NZ’s new sail design, known as the “bat wing” due to its resemblance to the comic book superhero’s ship, had not been seen before.

The kiwis were spotted this afternoon, stationed near Motuihe Island and surrounded by chase boats, with one crew member at the end of one of the blades in the water and others on the nearby deck.

At one point, a crew member could be seen climbing to the top of the mast to pull the sail up.

Te Rehutai has been reported to have been reaching speeds never seen before while training in the Hauraki Gulf.

The Italians look like the most likely opponent in the Copa America match, leading the Prada Cup final 4-0 and needing three more wins to advance.

The Cup match begins on March 6.
