‘Absolutely Desperate’: Parents of Missing Cattle Herd Manager Ask for Government Help in Rescue Efforts

The parents of one of the New Zealanders who disappeared after the sinking of a cattle boat are “desperate” for the government to help them with search and rescue efforts.

Lochie Bellerby and Scott Harris have been missing for more than a week after the ship they were on, Gulf Livestock 1, was caught in a typhoon and sank in the East China Sea on September 2. Another 41 crew members were also on board.

The Japanese Coast Guard has canceled their full-time search for the ship.

However, Bellerby’s parents are hopeful that the missing crew members are either on a life raft somewhere in the sea or have washed ashore on one of the many uninhabited islands.

Bellerby, who is in his 20s, was one of the managers of the cattle herd aboard the ship. His job was to look after the cattle on board during the sea voyage.

His mother told him Control It was his first great adventure at sea, although he had a lot of experience with rivers and lakes. He also said it was “extremely witty.”

The Gulf Livestock 1 left Napier in mid-August and was traveling to the east coast of China with 43 crew on board and 5,800 cows. The 140-meter-long ship reportedly sank after losing an engine due to bad weather from Typhoon Maysak on 2 September.
