The results of the referendums are published and show that the majority of those who voted said yes to euthanasia and no to the legalization of cannabis in New Zealand.
The results were announced today at 2 p.m. and sparked a lively discussion on social media, with people on both sides of the issues commenting on the majority’s decision.
The hashtag # referendum2020 was trending on Twitter after the announcement, and many Kiwis made their opinions on the results clear.
Most of the top tweets using the hashtag were disappointed with the result of the referendum on cannabis.
Several Twitter users agreed that the result of the cannabis referendum means that New Zealanders failed the country’s Maori and Pasifika communities, as well as those with illnesses who could benefit from cannabis use.
Several New Zealanders continue to call on the government to act on the cannabis issue, because they believe gangs should be removed from power.
The final results, which include around 480,000 special votes, will be announced next Friday, November 6.
