The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a bush while allegedly fleeing police in Dunedin yesterday is the same man who reportedly banged on doors and told people he was “fundraising,” police say.
The 29-year-old will face court on a series of charges following the chase, but no crime was determined in connection with the knocking on the door.
Acting Sergeant Major Anthony Bond said police identified a vehicle of interest at 12 p.m. yesterday and attempted to stop it on King Edward St, near Wilkie Rd.
“The vehicle initially stopped but then took off; the police followed it and a chase began.”
The vehicle drove through the Pak’nSave and Warehouse parking lot, to Hillside Rd and finally Andersons Bay Rd, where it allegedly “clipped” another vehicle, he said.
He then continued on State Highway 1 heading south “at high speed.”
The driver tried to turn onto Burnett St but failed: he hit a lamp post and hit bushes.
The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Dunedin hospital as a precaution.
Bond confirmed that the driver was the same man with a swastika tattooed on his face who was knocking on doors in St Clair and other suburbs on Monday night.
“The police have investigated the matter and determined that there is no crime, but they encourage the public to only give money to recognized charities, and not random members of the public knocking on doors, as it only encourages them to return.” , He said. .
The man will appear in Dunedin District Court Tuesday on charges of failing to stay, failing to stop, reckless driving, failing to stop to determine injuries and stealing.
