Ford teases hottest Puma ST

Ford is working on a new, hotter Puma. It will carry the ST badge and launch overseas later this year.

As reported on Twitter, the Puma ST will receive the Fiesta ST’s 1.5-liter 147kW / 290Nm triple turbocharged, which should be a noticeable improvement compared to the standard 92kW / 170Nm 1.0k turbo three.

Interestingly, the vehicle in the video appears to be being manually paddled through the gears. While the Fiesta ST has three pedals, SUVs are rarely seen in such an arrangement. It will be interesting to see how the Puma ST works if it does indeed come with a manual transmission.

Body trims will come in the form of a revised aerodynamic kit, which includes a new front bumper with wider air intakes and a lower front splitter. Around the rear will be two exhaust vents, a redesigned rear bumper, and a different spoiler.

Other changes under the skin involve a sportier suspension with stiffer springs and more reactive shock absorbers. Larger brakes will help keep that extra performance under control, while an optional limited slip differential will improve traction.

This is the standard Puma, which should land here this year with a starting price of $ 33,990 and $ 37,990 for the ST-Line version.

Selectable drive modes and launch control like the Fiesta ST are also expected.

The Puma will join the likes of Focus for a ST variant this year, after news of the disappearance of the next-generation Focus RS broke out last month.

In early April, Caradisiac It has reported that the fourth generation Focus will “not be entitled to a mastered RS version” due to emissions regulations and money.

The Focus ST will also be introduced this year, essentially being a modified and facelifted version of the previous generation Focus RS.

The new RS was supposed to get a smooth 48-volt hybrid system to boost performance and cut emissions, but the (sorry) approach soon became a more radical plug-in hybrid solution to boost power and keep emissions under control.

The plug-in powertrain would be based on the one found in the Escape PHEV, but was largely overhauled to increase output north of 300kW.

At least the next Focus ST will keep the sports gene alive on the biggest hatch. It is configured to use a 206kW / 420Nm version of the RS’s 2.3-liter engine, one that the Mountune tuning company has already racked up to 234kW / 515Nm.
