“It’s not just about numbers, so we don’t have to have zero cases every day in order for us to move to Level 2,” said Ardern of Premier House.

“You don’t have to see zero every day for us to move.”

It comes when the Director General of Health, Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, announced today that there are no new or probable cases of coronavirus, or new deaths.

The national total of Covid-19 cases remains at 1,487, with the death toll at 20.

Ms. Ardern added that there must be “some real consistency” around the origin of coronavirus cases.

She said that people who tested positive for coronavirus after returning to New Zealand from abroad, but are in quarantine, “means that we have good control over that and are not passing it on to anyone else.”

“That is really important.

“If we collect cases where we can’t tell the story of what happened … that’s more worrying.”

New Zealand entered Alert Level 3 last week after more than a month under strict Level 4 blocking restrictions, allowing more people to return to work and to restaurants and cafes to open for takeaways and deliveries.
