The show’s creator, Bill Lawrence, confirmed the news in a tweet that read, “Thinking too much about Sam Lloyd today. (Ted). Really such a kind and sweet guy. Many will miss him.”
Zach Braff, 45, who also starred in the show, paid tribute to his friend on social media.
Lloyd played lawyer Buckland with bad luck in the nine seasons of Scrubs, from 2001 to 2010.
He reappeared in the role of Cougar Town, which was also produced by Bill Lawrence.
In 1993, he starred in two episodes of Seinfeld as Ricky, obsessed with Elaine, the character of Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Lloyd also appeared in eight episodes of Desperate Housewives in two seasons, playing Dr. Albert Goldfine.
He and his wife Vanessa welcomed their first child together in early 2019, a baby named Weston, but shortly after birth, Lloyd began experiencing severe headaches.
A CT scan revealed a mass in his brain, and according to a GoFundMe page created by Scrubs producer Tim Hobert, he underwent brain surgery “in one day.”
“Unfortunately, the tumor was too intertwined for surgeons to remove it. By Sunday, Sam and Vanessa were informed that cancer in their brain had metastasized to their lungs.”
“Other scans showed that the cancer was also in his liver, spine and jaw,” said the fundraising page.
Lloyd experienced serious complications after undergoing surgery to remove the tumor and was transferred to the ICU at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Lloyd, a Vermont native, has lived in Los Angeles for the past 30 years. He is survived by his wife Vanessa and son Weston.
