Police are asking for information after a man attacked and robbed a Good Samaritan near Queenstown.
At 10.30pm last night, the victim stopped on Crown Range Road in the Eastern Road parking lot to help a man who was asking for help.
After stopping, the man asked the victim to check his car for trouble, before attacking him, hitting him multiple times, grabbing the victim’s backpack, and driving off.
The victim is now awaiting surgery on a jaw fracture.
Police say the man was around 1.8 meters tall, probably in his 20s and 30s, was sturdy and led a dark four-door room.
Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw, Central Otago CIB, said: “This was a cowardly attack on a well-intentioned person who was trying to help someone who thought they needed it.”
The victim was able to drive to the home of a relative, where they called the police and took him to the hospital.
The offender may have been arrested in the Queenstown / Arrowtown area or in Wanaka before or after the assault, Shaw said.
Anyone with information should call the police at 105, quoting file number 210327/4376.
Information can also be provided through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
