‘This type of Ellis Genge needs to be treated,’ claims Springbok Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira

England mainstay Ellis Genge has been served by South African World Cup winner Tendai Mtawarira, despite escaping a citation for appearing with an elbow to Ireland captain Johnny Sexton.

‘Beast’ Mtawariria, the loose head of the Springboks in their 2019 Rugby World Cup victory over England, posted a message on social media saying, “This guy from Ellis Genge needs to be dealt with properly.”

Genge was caught on camera elbowing Sexton in the face in a ruck in the final stages of Ireland’s 32-18 Six Nations victory over England last Saturday (Sunday New Zealand time).

Sexton was at the referee’s microphone telling referee Mathieu Raynal, “Sir, you elbowed me in the face.”

Genge replied, “Yes, I did. I did.”

The match officials overlooked the incident, and the legal period for citing a player for a possible red card infraction has expired without Genge being charged.

Genge’s discharge was criticized by Ireland Balls.ie website, which said Genge would not be quoted, “to the disbelief of anyone with a pair of eyes.”

“Considering the emphasis the sport has placed on avoiding potential head injuries, we are not quite sure how you can get away with a series of nasty blows to the head of an opponent,” wrote Gary Connaughton of Balls. ie.
