The man admitted to an attempted murder charge related to the actions he took in October 2020.

A man in his 80s has pleaded guilty to attempting to kill his wife in what has been described as a failed suicide pact.

The 81-year-old Waikato man has provisional name expungement and pleaded guilty in Hamilton Superior Court Thursday morning.

The charge relates to incidents that occurred on October 12, 2020 in rural Waikato.

Earlier, Judge Timothy Brewer described it as “a very sad case.”

The man’s lawyer, Roger Laybourn, has previously said that this was done as part of a suicide pact, although the Crown did not accept it.

The man is due to be sentenced in May and was placed in custody on bail.

He also received a warning, under the three strikes law, about the consequences of any other violent crime.

Judge Kit Toogood said the warning was given because the law required it, not because it viewed the man as a constant threat.

His provisional name removal continues for three weeks, to allow Laybourn’s request to continue.
