NZME suddenly shut down Radio Sport in March last year, taking the station off the air the same day it announced the plan to employees. Its closure came with firings of sports reporters, producers and presenters from across the company.

It also left a hole in the radio market, without a sports station dedicated to the air. MediaWorks talkback station Magic Talk took over the cricket commentary for the 2020-2021 season.

A SENZ spokeswoman said she was not ready to say when the station would launch. She said they would be making more announcements about the on-air talent soon.
