The octuple-bogey golfer’s horror show on the famous par 3 hole of the Players Championship

Anything Kevin Na can do, Byeong Hun An can do … worse.

After Na hit a quintuple of eight on the island green’s famous par 3 17th hole at The Players Championship, An shot an 11 on Friday morning (New Zealand time).

The South Korean put his ball in the water four times, resulting in four penalty shots, missed a 19-foot putt for 10, and finally ended his agony by making a four-foot putt for an octuple-bogey.

Surprisingly, it was not the highest score recorded for the hole during the Players Championship. That ‘honor’ belongs to Bob Tway, who rolled a 12 in the 2005 tournament.

However, An wasn’t done finding the water: he hit his tee shot on the next and last hole in the drink and double bogey, to finish with a first round of 11 over par.

Na’s quintuple-bogey came earlier, when his first three attempts to hit the island green found water, although he did a hole to ‘save’ an eight.

Na also dumped his tee shot on 18, bogey for a round of 81 and withdrew from the tournament with the official reason given to be a bad back.

Spanish veteran Sergio Garcia had no such problems: He shot seven under 65, including a comfortable par at 17, to lead by three shots during the first round.
