A 41-year-old man will appear in Whakatāne district court on Friday in connection with the death of Jamaine Wharton.
A fifth person has been arrested in connection with the death of Bay of Plenty man Jamaine Wharton.
The 31-year-old was at Saturday’s party at the Waiohau Rugby Clubrooms when the assault occurred.
Wharton died after being allegedly assaulted and stabbed when he was 21 in Waiohau, near Whakatāne, on February 28.
The Whakatāne Area Investigations Manager, Detective Sergeant Major Paul Wilson said, a 41-year-old man has been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He is scheduled to appear in Whakatāne District Court on Friday.
Police had already arrested two men, ages 25 and 20, and a 16-year-old in connection with the assault on Wharton at the party.
They were charged with assault with intent to injure.
A 42-year-old woman had also previously been arrested for inciting assault.
The investigation into the Wharton murder is ongoing and police would like to hear from anyone with relevant information.
