UPDATE: 07.36PM One person died after an accident in Lower Kaimai this afternoon.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident on State Highway 29 between Soldiers Road and Valley View Road around 3:40 p.m.

“The police can confirm that a person has been killed in the accident between two vehicles in SH29, Lower Kaimai, this afternoon,” says a police spokesman.

Another person was airlifted to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries, while two other people were taken by ambulance to Tauranga Hospital in serious condition.

Waka Kotahi NZTA has reported that the road remains closed between Poripori Rd and the SH29 / SH28 intersection.

“The road is expected to reopen in the next hour once emergency services have finished at the site,” says a police spokesman.

Emergency services responded to a serious accident between two vehicles in SH29.

A spokesman for St John says they received the call at 3.37pm and that three ambulances and two helicopters were at the scene.

A witness says the incident involved a truck and van with people said to be trapped.

Another person who called SunLive 0800, who works near the area, says he saw at least four ambulances, three fire trucks and several police cars on the way to the scene.

“It’s like all the emergency services in Tauranga are on their way,” says the caller.
