Simon Norris was staying at his friend’s house when the couple decided to sneak out and go for a walk.
The 14-year-old, who his parents believe had never driven on a highway before, pushed the car through the driveway with the help of his friend, also a young man.
About 10 kilometers down the road, the teenager missed a corner on Mai Mai Valley Rd, near Reefton on the west coast of the South Island, causing the car to roll across a bank at around 8.35pm on Saturday.
Simon died in the car while his friend, who suffered broken ribs, ran home for help.

His father, Ch’e Norris, told him Things the incident was “absolutely appalling”.
Norris visited the passenger, who has three broken ribs and a collapsed lung, in the hospital Sunday.
The injured boy, in whose house Simon was staying, said the two teens got away with the car keys after their mother went to sleep. The couple pushed the car out of the way and then started it.
“He told us they were going about 40-60km / h on the highway, that they were in the curves, and he went around the corner, missed the corner and just went off the edge and started rolling,” Norris said. .

Simon’s parents were notified of his death around 1.30 a.m. Sunday morning when police arrived at their Greymouth home, along with their reverend.
“It took me a few hours to sink in what had happened… we really couldn’t sleep at all, just thinking about Simon and driving,” Norris said.
Simon sometimes backed the station wagon out of the garage while his father watched, but he had never driven down the road before.
“He was really rebellious against us. We would tell him to do things, and he would just do what he wanted to do, and we would put it online, but I think since he was alone and with his friend, I think he thought he could do it. do what you want, ”Norris said.
The 14-year-old has two younger brothers: Nathan, 10, and Joel, 7.
“He was just an outgoing kid, he was going ahead in life with his education and everything.
