The aunt of an Auckland teenager who was shot in the face believes her “kind nephew” was shot from a car while playing basketball with other children.

The aunt has taken to social media to provide an account of the Northcote shooting at around 7 p.m. Friday.

Her nephew is stable in Auckland Hospital today, but may lose sight in his left eye.

The aunt says her 16-year-old nephew was on a basketball court on Cadness St when a car passed by and fired “blindly at a group of people.”

“I was at our local basketball court with friends when it happened. Imagine your son goes to the local park and then they tell him he was shot,” he said.

“He was my harmless and gentle nephew, my Choppas. I called my sister and could hear the anger in her voice. I was already on my way to the hospital to be with her baby.”

The boy’s mother also used Facebook earlier today to report that doctors had said her son had likely lost sight in his left eye.

The mother said her son was lying with: “Shotgun shrapnel in the hospital. And he could be blind in both eyes. We know for sure the left, time will tell if he will blind with the right.

Police said this afternoon that no arrests had been made at this time.

Now a cordon has been lifted after it was installed at the intersection of College Rd and Cadness St yesterday and remained overnight.

The teenager’s aunt took to social media to dispute claims that the incident involved gangs and lamented that “an innocent 16-year-old is in the hospital.”

Police said they received calls last night from members of the public saying they heard “multiple shots.”

Police said the teenager was taken to North Shore Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, before being transferred to Auckland Hospital, where he now remains stable.

Initial investigations indicate that large numbers of young people were on the reservation earlier in the evening.

Family members say the incident occurred at a local basketball court where he played with friends.
