The police armed criminal squad and the Eagle helicopter were deployed to Papatoetoe after reports of a gun being fired.
Police were initially called around 5.47pm after reports that a firearm had been fired at an address on Avis Avenue.
“The laces are in place and members of the public are asked to avoid the area. Updates will be provided when available, ”said a police spokeswoman.
A local Carruth Road resident, who gave her name only as Hapreet, said two ambulances had arrived under lights and sirens, and went down a side street.
The police helicopter was still present, hovering and circling.
He said the police did not allow any residents to be behind the roadblock.
“There is panic everywhere. We don’t know what’s going on here, but there is panic everywhere, ”Hapreet said.
“All the residents are out of their house and looking at the police, that’s all we know.”
Police responded to reports of what sounded like gunfire in Papatoetoe last night as well.
A police spokeswoman said Things Investigations had been made this morning, but no people or firearms were found about last night’s incident.
A worker at the local GAS station on the Great South Road said he had seen at least four police cars with lights and sirens driving through nearby Allenby Park.
He said customers had been asking what was going on, but he didn’t know the details.
