Dan Carter has described the New Zealand team’s Te Rehutai boat as “mind-blowing” after spending a day with the defenders of the America’s Cup.
On the back of his announcement confirming his retirement from rugby, the great All Blacks approached the pinnacle of sailing and had only admiration for New Zealand’s best yachts and his flying monohull.
“One magical day out there, it was a pretty strong wind, so the ship was flying. Seeing that up close and personal was amazing, ”Carter said.
“I’ve been following the Prada Cup and even the action before Christmas, but actually being in the water in the chase boat and seeing these boats, the maneuvers that they can do, the speeds that they can go, it was mind-blowing.

“Living and getting close to the action was so awesome. I can’t wait for the cup to start. It’s going to be a great series. “
Carter felt it was a dream start to his new life, although he made it clear that the America’s Cup would not be a new move in his career after seeing the effort required.
“This moment in life isn’t that bad really, the first week, and I’m on a chase boat with the New Zealand team. That is a dream result.
“I even took a look around the ship. I had 10 minutes on the grinder and that won’t be my next race that’s for sure … after 10 seconds I was blowing. “
The New Zealand team is making the last major breakthroughs at Te Rehutai before the ship’s main appendages are locked in for measurement early next week.
The New Zealand team will face Italy’s Luna Rossa Copa America match, a best-of-13-run series, starting March 6.
The Italians had their boat in the shed for a second day on Tuesday, making modifications after Sunday’s final Prada Cup victory over the UK team.
Carter did a motivational session with Sir Ben Ainslie’s British team at Eden Park before the Prada Cup challenger series.
His good teammate and former captain Richie McCaw spent a day on the opposition field with Luna Rossa during the Prada Cup semi-finals.
