Buckingham Palace has revealed that the Duke of Edinburgh is being treated for an infection, as his son, Prince Edward, said his father was “much better”.
The Palace said in a statement Tuesday that Prince Philip is likely to remain in the hospital “for several days,” where he is “receiving medical attention for an infection.”
“He is comfortable and responsive to treatment, but is not expected to leave the hospital for several days,” the brief statement said.
Prince Edward, the youngest son of Philip and the queen, told Sky News that he had spoken to his father on the phone and that the royal family “kept their fingers crossed.”
The Earl of Wessex said the 99-year-old was “much better, thank you very much, and is really looking forward to getting out, which is the silver lining. So we crossed our fingers.”
Edward said the family had received “bright and lovely messages” and that “we really appreciate him and so does he.”
When asked if the duke was frustrated, Edward added, “Just a little bit! I think that affects us all.”
The Duke has been in the hospital for seven nights, as photos showed police guards waving medical supplies at the entrance and the UK media camped out opposite.
Uniformed officers and a porter in a top hat, all wearing masks, stood guard outside King Edward VII Hospital in central London when Prince Philip entered there for the eighth day.
Tired-looking camera crews camped out the door ready for updates, as concern for the 99-year-old’s well-being remains high, who was initially only expected to stay in the hospital “for a few days of observation and rest, “according to Buckingham Palace.
He was admitted to Marylebone Private Hospital Tuesday night after feeling “bad” but was taken 26 miles (42 kilometers) from Windsor Castle and reportedly walked in.
The Palace said he was in a “good mood” and had been taken to hospital as a “precautionary measure”, but on Friday royal sources indicated that the duke would likely have to stay in hospital until this week.
Sources said Philip’s doctor was “acting very cautious.”
Visitors are banned from the hospital due to strict COVID-19 rules and it was reported that royals would only be allowed to enter under “exceptional circumstances.”
That’s why fears grew when Prince Charles made the journey from Gloucestershire to visit his father in hospital on Saturday, entering through the back entrance of the hospital where he was greeted by security personnel.
The Prince of Wales emerged grim-looking, however, then traveled back to his Highgrove home on a 200-mile (320-kilometer) round trip, rather than choosing to stay near London, which led to some to speculate that the Duke’s condition must be stable. .
No other member of the royal family has yet been to see the duke in hospital. The 94-year-old Queen remains in Windsor, where she and Philip received at least one dose of the Oxford / AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine in January.
The Palace did not initially reveal the reason behind Prince Philip’s admission, but sources said it was not related to Covid. All hospital patients are tested for the virus before admission and in their rooms.
Prince William told reporters yesterday that his grandfather was “fine”, giving him a cheeky wink during a visit to a vaccination center in eastern England. “Yes, okay, they are watching him,” the 38-year-old Duke of Cambridge told reporters.
The Sun reported that Prince Harry had called the Queen from California to inquire about his grandfather’s health, while he was reportedly in quarantine in preparation to fly back to the UK on a private jet. He is kept “regularly informed” about Prince Philip’s health, according to The Mirror.
Harry and Meghan Markle made their first appearance since announcing the news that they were expecting their second child on Monday, promoting their Archewell Audio podcast on Spotify’s Stream On virtual event.
A pregnant Meghan wore a $ 4,400 Oscar de la Renta gown as the couple talked from their living room at their Santa Barbara home.
It was also revealed over the weekend that the couple had informed the Queen that they would not be returning to the UK to resume royal duties and would continue their life in the United States, where they are raising their one-year-old son, Archie.
Her 90-minute television interview with Oprah Winfrey for NBC was filmed this week and will air on March 7, and the Queen will also deliver a television address the same night for Commonwealth Day.
Philip, who will turn 100 in June, has experienced a number of health problems in recent years.
The queen’s husband of 73 years was airlifted to the same hospital from their Sandringham home in Norfolk just over a year ago for treatment for a “pre-existing condition.” The Palace did not want to go into detail about his ailment or the nature of his treatment at the time.
He received treatment for a blocked coronary artery in 2011, a bladder infection in 2012, and exploratory surgery on his abdomen in June 2013. He also spent two nights in the hospital in 2017 just before his retirement from public life, a move which the Palace insisted was not related to health.
In April 2018, she underwent hip replacement surgery, but recovered well for Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding a month later.
In early 2019, the Duke was involved in a car accident when the Land Rover Freelander he was driving rolled over after a collision with another vehicle near the Sandringham estate.
