A former police officer involved in the Madeleine McCann case has surprisingly claimed that mother Kate McCann’s reaction to her daughter’s disappearance was not “normal.”

Former Portuguese cop Goncalo Amaral accused the McCanns of a cover-up and insisted that Kate should have been more excited the day her daughter disappeared.

Amaral was the lead investigator before being fired in October 2007 for criticizing the British police.

Now her controversial allegations are the subject of a new documentary looking at Maddie’s disappearance.

The McCanns had left Maddie, then only 3 years old, asleep with her twin brothers Sean and Amelie to go out for tapas with their friends on vacation at a bar near their apartment in Praia da Luz.

During that time Maddie disappeared.

In the documentary Targeting Kate in Prime Suspect: The Madeleine McCann Case, Amaral’s accusations are broadcast.

He said: “She has two children sleeping on a cot.

“He leaves them and then comes back to where he was having dinner when he could have gone out on the balcony and yelled or picked up the phone and asked for help.

“He walked 100 or 200 meters back to the restaurant, that’s not normal.”

In the documentary, Amaral also shot German officials who strongly believe that convicted pedophile Christian Bruckner is responsible for Maddie’s disappearance.

He described German officials as all talk, no action.

“They talk a lot but they don’t present evidence.

“The question is what are they doing? Why aren’t they telling us? There is a great lack of evidence.

“There is no evidence. They need to prove that someone broke into the apartment. They need to prove that it happened, but the German authorities have not released any other information.”

“Simply finding someone who fits a profile is not enough. This suspect is almost the perfect suspect.”

Amaral was involved in a lengthy legal battle with the McCanns after releasing his book in 2008 titled The Truth of the Lie.

In it, he accused the family of covering up Maddie’s accidental death.

Amaral, 61, told a Spanish-language television show in December 2019 when he was shown a photo of another man previously linked to Maddie’s abduction that the alleged kidnapper was “similar, very similar” to his father Gerry McCann.

He also made unsubstantiated claims that MI5 spies had helped cover up Maddie’s disappearance and death.

In response, Gerry has previously said that Amaral’s claims have hurt his search for Maddie.

“I’m sure it’s a very small minority of people who spend their time doing it, but they’ve totally inhabited what we do.”

Meanwhile, Brueckner’s attorney, Friedrich Fulscher, says his client has nothing to do with the case despite being located in the vicinity of the McCanns’ resort the night Maddie disappeared.

The McCanns have repeatedly said that the false accusations against them have hurt the search for Madeleine.

Despite efforts by German authorities to blame Brueckner, his lawyer says there is no evidence that he is involved.

“My client has not been charged with anything.

“He’s under investigation and under suspicion. I have to assume they don’t have any concrete evidence. I think that’s pretty typical for us Germans.

“We believe that we are something special, at least in Europe, and we believe that we can do things better than other nations. We will see if that is the case, but I don’t think so.”
