England captain Joe Root has won another double century to lead his team to a resounding 454-4 at tea on the second day of Test 1 against India.

Root, playing his 100th test, dominated the opening sessions as the Indian bowlers seemed lacking in ideas on a worthless field.

However, India caught their man right after the tea break, with Shahbaz Nadeem catching him off LBW for 218 and leaving the visitors 477-6.

Continuing his excellent form, Root entered the four test series against India with a double hundred and a great century in his two previous tests in Sri Lanka.

Not even an episode of cramp seemed to slow Root, who was assisted by Indian captain Virat Kohli in a moment of sportsmanship that was enjoyed by cricket fans on opening day.

England resumed the second day at 263-3 and have lost the grounds of Root, Ben Stokes (82) and Ollie Pope (34).
