Anna Grimaldi had a record night in Christchurch.
Para-athlete Anna Grimaldi set a New Zealand record of 5.78m in the long jump for the T47 category at the international track competition at Nga Puna Wai in Christchurch on Saturday night.
The 23-year-old from Dunedin, who won a gold medal at the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016, had a previous record of 5.72m.
As soon as she completed her jump Grimaldi looked euphoric and after a long delay, where two measuring tapes were needed to confirm the distances, it was announced that she had set a new record in New Zealand.
Earlier during the match, which took place in front of a large crowd, Tiaan Whelpton, Eddie Osei-Nketia, Joseph Millar and Hamish Gill attempted to break New Zealand’s 4x100m record.
The previous record was held by Dallas Roberts, David Falealili, James Dolphin, Chris Donaldson, set in Sydney in 2005, with a time of 38.99 seconds.
However, they never had a chance to challenge that, as the baton fell.
On the men’s puck, Connor Bell was looking for a 66-meter throw to gain automatic qualification for the Tokyo Olympics. His best attempt was 63.94m, but he didn’t seem very disappointed afterwards.
