Emergency services were called to the managed Crowne Plaza around 7:30 pm but were unable to help the 44-year-old.

The man had just arrived in New Zealand from Vanuatu yesterday and was a recognized worker with the Temporary Employer Program.

Brigadier General Jim Bliss, Chief of Managed Isolation and Quarantine, said the man’s death was not related to Covid-19.

“We are doing everything we can to help these CSR workers who are in their first day of 14 in controlled isolation and who will certainly find this very upsetting,” said Bliss.

“Our thoughts are with them and their family; the Crowne Plaza staff is providing support to all who need it.”

Family members have been notified and the death has been referred to the coroner’s office.
