Person dies in drowning on West Auckland’s Piha Beach

One person allegedly drowned on Piha Beach in West Auckland.

A police spokesman said the incident was reported to police shortly before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“Medical assistance was provided at the scene, but sadly the person died,” the spokesman said.

Lincoln Davies, a spokesman for the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust, confirmed that the Westpac 1 helicopter had been dispatched to the scene, but had no further information.

The death of the person will be referred to the forensic doctor.

A Piha Surf Academy worker said there were no lessons on Tuesday because of huge swell.

“We decided it wasn’t safe, so we didn’t go out today,” he said.
