Edinburgh running back Nic Groom has kept his sense of humor despite mistaking the sound of a passing train horn for the halftime horn in a PRO 14 rugby derby.
Groom, a South African who once played Super Rugby, threw the ball out of bounds with 30 seconds remaining in the first half of Edinburgh’s 23-22 loss to the Glasgow Warriors at Glasgow’s Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday (Sunday, New Zealand time).

“He thought the train horn was the halftime horn, which he’s used to from the southern hemisphere even though he’s been here for a couple of years,” said Edinburgh coach Richard Cockerill.
His Glasgow counterpart Danny Wilson joked: “I left the train conductor a WhatsApp and told him to make sure he breaks the horn when he passes!”

Groom added a few jokes of his own with a social media post, asking: Hi @ScotRail, how can I reach your complaints department?
Edinburgh held a 10-6 lead with the potential to increase their score when Groom kicked the ball into touch.
But Glasgow benefited from the hearing error, kicking a penalty goal in the 41st minute to cut the halftime deficit to 10-9.
“It was a bit frustrating because we had gotten a good score and we were looking to go further at the break, but we gave them free territory for no reason and we ended up being sanctioned. We conceded three points and lost by one, ” Cockerill said at the Scottish.
“It’s not Groomy’s fault, but it’s those little moments, and there were a lot of them in the first 20 minutes after halftime too, where we didn’t take good enough care of the ball and we didn’t do the basics well enough. “
Groom 30, joined Edinburgh from the Lions Super Rugby team in 2019.
Edinburgh lost despite beating Glasgow by three attempts to two.
Former Fiji test winger Eroni Sau scored a late try for Edinburgh, but Jaco van der Walt missed the conversion that would have given Cockerill’s team victory.
