A child was transferred to Starship Hospital after a water incident in the Auckland suburb of Panmure.
St John confirmed that the incident occurred around 3.35pm on Lagoon Drive.
The Herald understands that the incident occurred at the Lagoon Pool and Leisure Center YMCA in Panmure.
A supervisor at the center would not speak to NZME.
More than 10 people have died in water-related incidents in the past two weeks.
Water Safety New Zealand CEO Matt Claridge previously described the loss of life as a “tragic outcome”.
Three more people drowned than the five-year average of seven during the official Christmas and New Years holiday period, which ran from 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve to 6 a.m. today.
He previously said it was particularly disappointing given the organization’s pre-Christmas water safety campaign.
“The toll is heartbreaking. Many families have lost loved ones, a young child, sons, daughters, friends, and while there is a whole community of people, including surfing coast guards, lifeguards, maritime officers and many others, working hard to keep New Zealanders safe in the water, we cannot do it alone.
“We need all New Zealanders to make water safety a priority today if we are to reduce our terrible number of drownings.”
