Canterbury Police issued a district-wide arming warrant for frontline police after a double shooting in Kaiapoi.

Canterbury District Acting Commander Detective Superintendent Tom Fitzgerald said Stuff The order was placed on Monday.

“The blanket order to arm is due to the increased risk to personnel as a result of this morning’s shooting and the ongoing investigations into it.

“Until all those responsible are located, the personnel will be armed for the next 24 hours.

“We have people that the investigation team is looking for who could be armed and tensions are increasing between those parties.”

Stuff understands the shooting is gang related.

It comes after four people were charged with the murder of a Christchurch man after a New Years Eve party at the headquarters of the international motorcycle gang Mongols MC. The incident is not believed to be related to the Kaiapoi shooting.

Police have two people in custody after two men were shot in Kaiapoi early Monday morning.

A man is at Christchurch Hospital in serious condition after being shot in the arm. Police were called around 3:30 a.m. when he arrived at a house in Kaiapoi seeking help.

At around 5 a.m., a second man was left at Christchurch Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm, but he was not seriously injured.

The two people who left the second man at Christchurch Hospital are in police custody.

The two people were assisting police with their investigations, a spokesman said.

“Those involved in this incident are believed to know each other and there is no risk to the community at large,” he said.
