Wellington College in shock over the death of former student Fletcher Wong who disappeared from Rhythm & Vines

The teenager found dead after disappearing from the Rhythm and Vines festival was a talented and passionate soccer and futsal player.

Wellington College athletic director Dave Keat said former student Fletcher Wong was a member of the school’s first XI soccer team and the futsal team that won the high school championship in 2018.

“The entire university community is in shock,” Keat said. “He was a good enthusiastic player. He was quiet, he was well liked by the staff and the boys.

“He liked soccer and futsal. He faced it because he was quite a young boy, but he always gave everything.”

Despite that, he was part of the best teams in the school and was selected to represent Wellington on the U16 team at the New Zealand Youth Futsal Championship in 2017.

“He was a nice boy,” Keat said. “That this happens is a real shock.”

The 19-year-old was reported missing on Tuesday.

He was last seen leaving the admissions area of ​​the Gisborne Rhythm and Vines festival site at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

Search and rescue volunteers found his body yesterday in the Ormond area of ​​Gisborne.

Online tributes described Wong as a “dynamo both on the futsal field and on the soccer field” and a “crazy, skilled player … and just a really nice kid, he wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

Another person said he was “a very talented player and a charming, polite boy.”

Police said there was nothing suspicious about her death, that she had been referred to a forensic doctor.
