The airport has since received the go-ahead to resume airport operations, but there are still delays for travelers.

Police previously said they were responding to the threat and, as a “precaution”, evacuated the airport.

The Gisborne airport confirmed to 1 NEWS that it had received a “bomb threat” and the delays lasted several hours.

A sniffer dog was brought in to investigate and “strict security protocols and controls are being followed,” the airport said.

Air New Zealand said it was holding all flights to and from Gisborne.

Flight NZ8488 to Gisborne was returned to Wellington and another flight NZ8493 to Gisborne was also canceled.

Gisborne airport estimated that both incoming and outgoing flights could be affected “for several hours”, however it has since been able to reopen.

The news comes as hundreds of festival goers return home after the Rhythm and Vines festival ended last night, outside of Gisborne.
