Residents of a New York neighborhood are dealing with a tremendous threat.
Residents of the Rego Park neighborhood in Queens say an aggressive squirrel jumped on them and bit them in recent weeks, WCBS-TV reported Wednesday.
Micheline Frederick pointed to a bruise on her wrist where she said the squirrel landed on her and then sank its teeth into her fingers and hand.
“We are fighting in the snow and there is blood everywhere and they chew on my fingers and it will not come loose,” said Frederick. “Eventually it just stopped and there I was a big mess.”
A photo Frederick says he took after the attack shows a snowy road covered in blood.
“This was an MMA cage match! And I lost!” she added.
Two other neighbors told WCBS that the squirrel had jumped on them, apparently without provocation.
“These squirrels aggressively chase people,” said Vinati Singh.
The city’s Health Department advised residents to hire a licensed trapper, but the large metal traps have yet to catch any squirrels, the broadcaster reported.
The reason for the aggressive behavior of the squirrel (or squirrels) is unclear. Small rodents like squirrels rarely test positive for rabies and are not known to have transmitted it to humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
