An injured man spent six hours trapped in his overturned car after turning off a rural highway in North Waikato.

Emergency services released the man after a member of the public discovered the car rolled along Highway 22 in Glen Murray around 9 a.m. Friday.

The man’s car is understood to have left the road early around 3 a.m., Sgt. Andrew Heath said. Stuff.

“A member of the public has called this out. We have a lot of crashes on this road, but not all of them are reported to the police,” Heath said.

Heath said Highway 22 is a popular route for motorcyclists because of its “twist and turn” nature.

The injured driver, described as a man in his 20s, was airlifted from the scene of the accident with a suspected broken leg.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a driver for alcohol after a two-car frontal collision near Kāwhia.

Waikato Police Sergeant Major Bill Ruddell said it was a “minor” accident, reported off Waiwera St before 10 am Friday.

“There was only one person in each car, the drivers, and no one was injured.

“Several local people got involved and were upset by the incident.

“More police personnel were called to the scene to calm the crowd.”

Those who attended the accident were related to the drivers involved in the accident, Ruddell said.

Police said a driver was being prosecuted for driving under the influence of alcohol.
