A woman in her 70s died on Auckland’s north shore after a water incident tonight.

Emergency services were called in for the incident on Island Bay Rd off the coast of Beach Haven at 6:40 a.m. tonight, but were unable to revive the woman.

“The deceased was pulled out of the water by members of the public and ambulance personnel attempted to provide medical care, but were unsuccessful,” police said.

Death will be referred to the coroner.

A rescue helicopter was dispatched to the shore of Beach Haven, as well as two ambulances and numerous police cars.

Beach Haven residents have taken to Facebook to discuss the large emergency services presence at the pier.

“They have allegedly closed the beach. I was walking back from New World and four ambulances and four police cars sped past,” said one resident.

“And then the helicopter appeared. As I was walking down Island Bay toward home.”
